A citizen of Earth

Where do I belong to? What is my community? Those questions are important because the answers give us a sense of belonging.

Everywhere I read or hear about regions that want to be independent and I understand this tendency. Especially during times of hardships and living in a society where news outlets present us with a constant influx of things we need to be afraid of, the tendency to look within is normal, I guess. It is a question of trust, and I trust the people from my community more than I will trust people from “outside”.

Where do I see myself? I was born in Germany. To be more precise, I was born in Berlin. And to be even more precise, I was born in Köpenick. However, I try to go the other way when looking for my community. I was also born in Europe and I was also born as a citizen of Earth. The amazing blue ball floating through space, we all call home. That is one of the messages I want to convey. We are all citizens of Earth. We might look differently, speak differently, and have different opinions, but there are more similarities than differences.

It is good to know your community and to have a community you feel safe and comfortable in. I won’t argue with that. I just want to remind you that we are all in it together. As one of my friends often says: “A stranger is a friend I didn’t meet yet”. Don’t let fear cloud your judgement of others. Try to get to know them or at least try to understand them. That can already help to get closer together as one people.

And I know there are a lot of things that need to be improved. But I also know that there is so much beauty all around us. The ongoing globalization will present us with different people, different cultures, and different ways of thinking. Try to embrace it and try to learn from each other. I hope that then more and more people will call themselves proud citizens of earth.

Have a wonderful day and take care!
