22 things happy people do – part 1

As you might know, positive psychology is one of my interests. A while ago, I made myself a list of 22 things happy people do. I want to share this list with you =)

This will be the first part of the list.

Before I start, I want to say that this list is neither complete, nor will all of the items make you necessarily happier. However, I think that the living by all or some of those points, increases the likelihood of achieving sustainable happiness.

  • Don’t hold grudges

That is often hard to do. Often the people we like or love most did something that hurt us and we ruminate about it and cannot let go. But please be aware that you don’t forgive others for their sake. No. You do it for yourself. Constantly thinking about it will sap your energy. And one Buddhist saying is: “Being angry at someone is like holding a hot stone with the intent to throw it at someone else. You are the one getting burned.” So, do yourself something good, and let go of your grudges.

  • Treat everyone with kindness

I just want to add that treating others with kindness should be about giving something (and be it a smile) without wanting something back in return. It is unconditional love that makes us happy or happier.

  • See problems as challenges

A good way to train this is by writing down three things that were positive during your day. Do this for a couple of weeks and you will see that your mind sees problems as something positive, as there is always something that can be gained or learned from a problem.

  • Express gratitude for what you already have

If you have access to a computer and a stable internet connection, I think there might be plenty of other things you can be grateful for, too. =) For a year, I carried with me a nice stone that was a gift and I made it my gratitude stone. So, every time I felt grateful, I took it in my hand and said thank you in my mind.

  • Dream big

I think that this is only half of it. Yes, I also feel motivated and happier, when I think about big dreams and goals, but this can turn into a negative feeling when a key part is missing: taking action. If you dream big AND act, you are destined to live a happy life.

That is the end of the first part. What are the things that make you happy? Let me know in the comments below.

Here you come to the next part.

Have a wonderful day and take care!

A Quote by Mahatma Gandi came to my mind when reading this: ‘Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony’. I think this reflects my views of happiness pretty well. Too many people are constantly thinking and even talking about things they want to do but are not acting on it. This can turn into deep frustration much like you talked about in your point ‘Dream Big’. I like this style of article, because it has just a few clear points with precise explanations. Great work!
